UNLINEAR makes circular economy perceptible.
Circular systems already exist. Materials return. Products are reused. Metals are recycled. Packaging disappears into refill cycles. Yet the difference between linear extraction and circular intelligence remains largely invisible. It hides in reports, in spreadsheets, in procurement decisions.
UNLINEAR translates these hidden dynamics into spatial experience.
At its core lie scientifically grounded Life Cycle Assessments. Linear processes are placed beside circular ones. Emissions shift. Material flows reorganize. Economic value transforms. What appears identical on the surface reveals entirely different consequences when examined across time.
These differences are not presented as numbers alone. They unfold as immersive environments.
Recycling becomes a shrinking CO₂ cloud.
Waste becomes a physical presence.
Longevity becomes atmosphere.
Energy for the experience is generated by the bodies of visitors. Movement charges the system. Circularity is not described — it is enacted.
UNLINEAR operates at the intersection of scientific rigor and artistic translation. It treats ecological and economic effects not as abstract indicators, but as forces that shape space, perception and decision.
The project asks a simple question:
What changes when sustainability is not reported, but experienced?
Developed within Dataskin by Dr. Lisa Lechner in collaboration with XR and industry partners, UNLINEAR forms part of a larger investigation into how complex systems can become tangible without losing precision.
It does not simplify circular economy.
It makes it felt.
UNLINEAR is funded by Land Tirol Innovationsförderung.
Cooperation partners: Plansee Group, Hollu Systemhygiene, Mediasquad
